The Panama Metro Line 2 Branch project is 85% complete in terms of civil works and electromechanical systems, and 38% complete in terms of the integral railway system (SIF). The project has 2 stations, ITSE and Airport, and extends for approximately 2 kilometers from the bifurcation of the South Station of Metro Line 2 to the new air terminal of Tocumen International Airport (AIT).

In terms of civil works, with 3 active work fronts and 650 workers, this year the project has culminated important construction stages such as: the entire viaduct and drainage works to the existing watercourses; the assembly of the roof of the ITSE Station, and the assembly and hoisting of the pedestrian walkways of both stations. Also, the assembly of all the beams of the project has been completed (104 “U”, “NU” and box beams) The structures are large structures with weights ranging from 100 to 160 tons and dimensions ranging from 20 to 42 meters.

The Airport Station, which will serve 8,000 workers and thousands of Panamanian and foreign passengers, is 81% complete in its civil works, and it is estimated that the roof assembly will be completed by the end of 2021. These jobs require highly complex maneuvers, with a height limit of 18 meters, so as not to affect the approach cone of aircraft during their landing procedure at the AIT.

The ITSE Station has 87% progress in its civil works and its connectivity will benefit more than 5 thousand students of Instituto Técnico Superior Especializado (the Higher Specialized Technical Institute) (ITSE), INADEH students, schools and surrounding communities.

At the integrated railway system level (SIF), progress to date includes design, as well as the arrival on site of various systems and components for this stage. Recently, the contractor SIF has started field work with the logistics of hoisting equipment and materials along the viaduct, as well as with the installation of the railroad.

The project is scheduled to start operations in the first quarter of 2023.
