For the seventh consecutive year, OEC, a leading company in the areas of heavy construction, assembly and maintenance of industrial enterprises, received the Gold Seal in the GHG Protocol Program - the tool most used by companies and governments to understand, quantify and manage Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. With this further certification, the company reinforces the list of external trademarks that attest to its strong agenda of commitment to the climate and its sustainability guidelines that incorporate performance standards, principles and policies of international standards.
The Brazilian GHG Protocol Program encourages corporate culture in favor of the elaboration and publication of the GHG Emissions Inventory. OEC carries out the inventory of its emitting sources in all works and has carried out the external verification of its reports since 2010, having become a reference when it comes to low carbon economy. OEC's commitment to the climate agenda was confirmed by the involvement of more than 30 professionals who work in all the countries in which the company operates and who were engaged in the preparation of the inventory.
“OEC is the only representative of the heavy construction sector to have certification as recurrent as this. The frequency of the award shows consistency in our sustainable counterpart policy and our permanent commitment to the environment”, says Marcelo Piller, director of Engineering, Innovation and Sustainability at OEC. For Marco Siqueira, CEO of the company, ESG is a theme that evolves day after day in internal discussions, being one of the pillars of the company's performance. “The market is constantly improving its concepts and companies are increasingly aware that they need to establish strict protocols to monitor, reduce and mitigate their emissions,” he says.

Climate Agenda
In addition to GHG Protocol’s highest certification, OEC maintains other climate-oriented initiatives. It is, for example, a signatory to the Open Letter to Brazil on Climate Change, a commitment in which companies from different areas of the Brazilian productive sector presented proposals to reduce emissions to the Government, and remains engaged in the initiatives of the Climate Forum, a working group coordinated by the Ethos Institute (Brazil) that monitors the private sector's contribution to reducing negative impacts on climate change.
The mitigation of the impacts of the productive sector and the promotion of actions to adapt to climate changes are particularly relevant for civil construction and are related to the environmental balance and the quality of life of people in the vicinity of major infrastructure works. OEC has defined strategies to reduce its emissions, focused on optimizing the consumption of inputs that have a high carbon footprint and on rationalizing travel (land transport and air travel). OEC's greenhouse gas emissions are directly related to the phases of the projects developed throughout the year. The reduction in gross emissions and the intensity of emissions measured by OEC in 2019 reflect the characteristics of the portfolio as well as demonstrating the efforts made to optimize processes, in particular, the consumption of fossil fuels.
